Currently located adjacent to Fairfax and Arlington Counties, Virginia, Alexandria was founded in 1749 in Fairfax County. Portions of present-day Alexandria were ceded to the District of Columbia on March 30, 1791 but then ceded back to Alexandria County (renamed Arlington County in 1920), Virginia on September 7, 1846.
