From the Mississippi Department of Archives and History Governor Alcorn Collection. Letter from Mary Beckman to Mississippi Governor James L. Alcorn, concerning her brother William A. Moxest, whom she has not heard from since last October. She tells Alcorn that her brother now resides in Mississippi and was appointed by Alcorn as a detective. She asks Alcorn to relay a letter from her to her brother.

Alcorn, recounting the events of how he was first imprisoned during the Civil War for horse theft and how he came to be released, only to be rearrested. He is asking Alcorn to review his case to see if his second arrest was legal in hopes that Alcorn would order his release.

Alcorn, requesting to be appointed as a United States Steamboat Detective and offers to work without salary by financing the position with government levied fines. Mulkey explains that the ongoing negligence from steamboat workers and corruption from the inspectors is the reason for many of the steamboat disasters. He believes this can be remedied by taking up this position.

Shattuck from the office of Mayor of Okolona, Mississippi. By the request of John Whib, Abbott recommends W. E. Weddell and E. J. Buford as Aldermen, as well as E. J. Ruford to replace Rich A. Pollard who does not act as Aldermen but has not resigned either.
