Powers whose term as governor expired shortly before the date on this letter. In the letter, Gill resigns as mayor of Hillsboro, Mississippi, and recommends John A. Park to fill the vacancy until an election is held. Included is a note from one of Mississippi Governor Adelbert Ames's private secretaries, giving a summary of Gill's letter.

Letter from William Noonan, superintendent of the Mississippi State Penitentiary, to Mississippi Governor Adelbert Ames, informing Ames of the release of two inmates whose time has been served. Included is a note from I. N. Osborn, Ames's private secretary, giving a summary of Noonan's letter. (The date on Noonan's letter appears to be January 2, 1874, but Osborn's note gives the date as January 2, 1875. The latter date is most likely correct as Noonan's letter refers to the inmates' sentences expiring "during this month", and then lists the dates of expiration as January 10 and January 11, 1875).
