Honorable John J, Pettus, Governor of the State of Mississippi.

The petitioners whose names are affixed hereto would humbly represent to your Excellency that Richard Hartley, farmer, resident of [gap] the County of Copiah, and now a private Member of Captain Wiley J. Butler's Co. (B) of the First Regiment of the Mississippi Minute Men, now stationed at "Milldale", under command of Colonel Benj King; is the only man now residing in a neighborhood of consider=able extent in this portion of the county, who is of health and strength suffi=cient to attend to the conduct of ordinary business. That the said neighborhood comprises in the population a very large proportion of slaves; and the whites are only women and children, helpless and defenseless, their husbands and fathers being absent in the army, with the exception of a very few, who are unable by reason of sickness to attend to any business.

Your petitioners would further represent that said Richard Hartley has a large family of small children. That his wife is at present, and has been for several weeks in very low health, and that her recovery is uncertain. That Mr. Hartley is a poor man, and that therefore his presence is absolutely and pressingly necessary to his family at this time; and that his presence in the neighborhood would tend, as much as that of any one man, to reassure the minds and allay the un=easiness necessarily endured by other unprotected families.

Wherefore, we, men and women,^do^ humbly petition your Excellency that you will cause the said Richard Hartley to be [gap] discharged, detailed ^furloughed^ or exempted from camp, and permitted to return to his home and these remain until such time as his presence—from a discontinuance of the causes assigned—is less pressingly required than at present. And your petitioners, as in duty bound, will ever pray &c,
