Gov Pettus—

Genl Pemberton has shown me his letter to you in regard to mining operations at Averys Island—I beg leave to suggest the Importance of directing the State Agent—to procure, If possible fuse and powder for blasting—as also the services of some men experienced in mining—provided they can be found—The Country is Completely barren of spades shovels—wheebarrows—Carpenters Blk. smith Tools and in fact almost every thing required to work with—It might be well also If you send a very large force—to let a competent man precede it in order to provide quarters & other things required for their comfort—
