His Excellency
J. J. Pettus Com^dr,, in Chief &c.

The undersigned Officers of the 4^th Regiment of Miss, State Troops Respectfully show to Your Excellency, that this Regiment is Composed almost entirely of middle aged men of large families and limited means, They come from counties which have been recently overrun by the enemy—In many cases their property has been destroyed or much injured, Their cattle killed, horses & mules stolen, wagons carried away, Hogs if penned killed or if saved from the destruction of the enemy, they were so by being turned out and are now running at large in the woods. In almost every instance families are left without the usual provision for the winter in consequence of their Heads being in this service, which coupled with the recent depredations of the Enemy, leaves them in, a most destitute and suffering condition

In the present condition of the Roads, and position of the enemy it is believed, They are not likely to make any immediate advance into the interior of the State from their present lines And the undersigned believe That the occasion might be wisely and ben-eficially improved, To allow these poor and patriotic citizens to go home for six weeks or two months, kill their hogs, provide their families with salt, fire-wood and other indispensable necessaries of life

and prepare for pitching little crops for the women and children to cultivate the ensuing year, And when it is remembered that the privilege of going home, gathering the last crop of corn and sowing wheat, was denied them, and That in consequence much of the last crop was lost, and Their families are without any incoming wheat crop; and That These sacrifices were cheerfully made by the large majority of the command, from patriotic devotion to the holy cause of Indepen-dence, for which our country is struggling, The un-dersigned Respectfully suggest That the indulgence now asked, is not Too much; and That To grant it would be well calculated, to incite with re-newed zeal The entire command, and stimulate Them To return to the Tented fields, with a firmer resolve to defend to the bitter end, the sovereignty of Mississippi from the assaults of the invader

They therefore Respectfully pray that the entire Regiment be furloughed for 60 days
