To Maj Genr^l Tupper:

Gen^l_, I beg leave to repor=rt to you that on the 17th Feb. last while defending our wagon train. we had (8) of our Bat^l_. captured. Previous to this time we had five (5) others captured. all privates & noncommissioned officers: Who are now confined in the Irvin Block. The Block is represented as being almost insufferable owing to its filth and long continued use as a prison. one of our men Mr, Jame Oneal a stout, healthy, robust, farmer has died since his confinement. (as we learn from men who were confined with him)—without medical attention and from wanton neglect, We have at this time Gen^l. several Federal prisoners at our camp: and can in less than two days capture enough to secure the release of all of our prisoners. We beg of you Gen^l. your assistance in allowing us to communicate under a flag of Truce with the Federal authorities in Memphis for the sole purpose of exchanging our men.=
