Mr R. A. Murdock has been lately drafted in the militia (Capt. Eckfords Company) and ordered to report for duty.

You will see from the within statement that his services are exceedingly valuable at this post—More so than of any other point. We are now furnishing Vicksburg with nearly all the ^corn^ used by the army—also a large quantity of stock, together with other things of equal impor-tance.

It is exceedingly difficult to procure efficient and reliable men to place in this service—He is emminently so., his services are at this time indispensable as an agent in accomplishing the above.

For these reasons I have the honor to ask his discharge, or if this be incon-sistent with your orders upon this subject—his detail with orders to report here for duty, in employ of major Theobald Quarter master of post.

More particularly so now as I am buying corn for Vickburg and you know the importance of the work—

I respectfuly ask that he be allowed to remain with me as a change of Employees [?] much trouble and anoyance. and I doubt if his plase can be filled by any other now in reach Hoping you will find it consistant to let him remain I am
