Honourable J. J. Pettus

Dear Sir, I take the privilige of addressing you a few lines and asking your indulegence and aid in procuring me the appoint=ment of Tax Collector of Kemper County, for the Confederate Government, I am aware that the State Marshal has the appointing with him I am not aquainted nor does he know any thing about my quallifications or fidelity, from your long acqua=intance with me you are able to Judge whether an appointment would be Safe in my hands or otherwise, doubtfuls there will be other applicants, this is the first time I ever Solicited an appointment from the State or Confederate Government. nor would I do it now if I was able to go to the War, and perform the duties of a Soldier in the lines, from my age you are aware that I would not be able to Stand a Soldiers life in the Camps but Still I believe I am able to perform the duties I Solicit with fidelity to the Government and Satisfactory to the Tax payers and let young able bodied men go to the war and defend their County in this our day of trial. I hope you will not think I have been presuiming too much in my request and any aid or assistance you may render in the premises will be duly appre=ciated, I remain dear Sir yours respectfully
