I was drafted in Oct last as one of the Minuet Men in Capt Colmes Co. 3^rd Batt 4^th Brigade Miss State Troops. I furnished a Substitute who has been in Service ever since & was parolled at Vicksburg of the 4_th inst. I do not know whether under the Circumstances I am liable to Conscription under the late Call or not. Will you please advice me & if I am liable will the State release my substitute.

I do not feel that I can do much Service as a private in the field & would like some position where I can make myself useful & not be in much Exposed, as I would be as a private. Do you know if any such place that I can get? Please let me hear from you at your Earliest Convenience.
