Sir:—

Inasmuch as we find it impossible to procure, at any price, alcohol for manufacturing medicine which cannot possibly be made without ^it^ and which we have daily calls for at our Drug Store, by the Physicians and citizens, we respectfully ask permission to distill a sufficient quantity, at such times as may be convenient, to make such medicines as cannot be made without it, and only for our own use. It will be necessary to make it from grain, of which there is an abundance here, and large quantities will be lost for want of means of gathering. Hoping our petition may be granted we remain

To the Governor Messers Orrick & Landers the petitioners have a Drug Store in this place, at which many prescriptions are Daily put up, both for Physicians & citizens—They are gentle=men of high character and their statements are entitled to full credit.—I would state in addition, that the abundance of corn raised in this county renders a compliance with their request (if in your power) a det-riment to no one, and a great benefit to the Com-munity.
