Sir

Seeing your presence in Washington announced in the newspapers, and being ac-quainted with you through my father-in-law, Rev Serene Taylor, I take the liberty of addressing you this to solicit your assistance in getting out of this prison. More than a month ago my name was sent on from here on the rolls of those who applied for permission to take the oath of allegiance These rolls have not been acted on, and will not be until all prisoners below the rank of Major are disposed of under the orders lately issued. I am extremely anxious to rejoin my family from whom I have been long separated, and to assist in restoring affairs to a condition of law and order in my dis-tracted country. Unless some friend intercedes for me I will have to remain here three or four months. I know of no Louisianian in Washington to whom I could apply for assistance. Gov Wells and D^r Cottman were there but have left, I think

All information required concerning my status is contained in the rolls referred to I resided in Clinton, La. previous to the war. If you will give this matter your attention, and write and telegraph me the result I will be everlasting-ly grateful. Imprisonment has become almost maddening.
