Hon. W. L. Sharkey

Dear Sir

Permit me to recommend Mr. S. Wood for the Office of Clerk of the Ciruit Court of this County.

Mr. Wood held that office, by election, for some fifteen or twenty years and was regarded as one of the most competent of the State. His services in that office, at this time, would seem to be almost indispensable. The Court House and Clerk's Office were made H^d. Quarters for the Provost Marshall for some time after the occupation of Natchez and during that time all or nearly all of the indexes to the Records were destroyed. Mr. Wood from his familiarity with the Records is almost an index himself. His appointment would, I am Satisfied, give general satisfaction to the Bar
