His excellency
Governor W. L. Sharkey

I am truly gratified at your appointment as governor of this State our whole country is delighted with the appointment nothing has occured since the disbanding of the Southern army that has done more to reconcile the people of this country than your appointment and I intend it as no empty compliment to you when I say I congratulate my country truly upon your appoint-ment.

Governor I am no applicant for office I wish to return to my profess^ion^ and by honest industry and application I hope to make a living for myself and family I write you more particularly on the part of my friend Col William F Curlee he was my adjutant three years of the war and a nobler better and more worthy young man does not live in the State he is a graduate of the law school at Lebanon Tennessee, had practiced three or four years before the war with remarkable success, a young man of liberal education of good habits and unexceptionable morals

having had the best advantages and having been reduced by the spoilations of the war from a state of affluence to absolute poverty and being abundantly efficient in every particular I beg leave governor to present his name to you as a suitable person for the appointment of district attorney for the district composed of the country of Tishomingo, Pontotoc &c he lives in Tishomingo the largest and most populous county in the district the appointment would be well appreciated by him & I shall ever reguard it as the highest manifestation of your friendship and kindness to me personally
