Dear Sir.

We would most respectfully ask relief from paying the whole amount of Tax assessed against us in your Proclamation of July 17^th 1865—

We would Respectfully repres^en^t that we are doing business here in the Dry Goods Trade to a limited amount—we commenced business at this Place on March 18^th 1865. the entire amount of Goods Purchased by us Since that time is $6225.²⁵/₁₀₀—and the Stock remaining on hand July 5^th 1865—was $2940.⁹²/₁₀₀—So that the amount of our Sales calculating at Cost value has been $3284.³³/₁₀₀—and we have not been engaged in the Purchase of cotton—

Now we would most respectfully Submit whether it would be justice to us—that we Should be obliged to Pay as much for our Small business—as Stores that are doing more Cash business every week than we have done during the entire time we have been in business here—

We would therefore most respectfully ask that the Sheriff (Mr O. Metcalf) be instructed to collect from

us only our just Proportion of this Tax—upon full examination of the facts in our case—

we write you upon this Subject because you have reserved the right to grant relief to persons too heavily burdened by this Tax—

hoping to receive the relief asked for we are as ever
