Dear Sir

I am aware that personally I have no claim by which to ask a favor of you; but I am induced to do so from your character & the belief that you will take pleasure in relieving the daughter of your old profess-ional associate & friend. My little piece of land near [?]. 45 or 50 acres, is the only thing left my children & self from the wreck of the past war. In the rappid changes after our fall Mr. Cox lost all he had made, & my daughter & I have now to aid in the support of the family by teaching, That which I wish

is, that you will pay the taxes on my land, & take a lean on the land until I can pay you which will be during next year. We expect to return in Jan or the spring.

This little matter is of such vital importance to us that I have also written to Dr. Birchette of [?] [Co.?] hoping that if one letter failed to reach the other would not. If your state cares, will not permit you to attend to this, please write to Dr. B., enclose this, & decide between you which will loan the money.

The titles are made to me by Pat Tompkins & wife; as you will see by the court reccords. Remember me with love to your dear wife. Sallie wishes to be remembered to you both.
