To His Excellency Charles Clark
Governor of the State of Mississippi

The petition of Mrs. E. E. Lee, wife of A J Lee, a citizen of Kemper County, and State of Mississippi would respectfully show, that on the 12th day of March 1864 her husband A, J. Lee was arrested while at work on his plantation in Kemper County, by two persons who claimed to belong to General Adams Brigade of Cavalry, in the Service of the Confederate States, and carried by them away from his house to some post not known by your petitioner without any authority, cause or provocation, Known to your petitioner, that said petioner is left in a distressed situation, on account of Said illegal arrest; and in Consequence there of, would petition your Excellency to cause the Said A. J. Lee to be demanded from General Adams, & for him, or to those under his authority to show cause of said illegal arrest and as in duty bound will ever pray &c and your petitioner would further state that the said A. J. Lee was sargent in the [?] and a paroled prisoner at Vicksburgh

These papers are respy refd to Brig Genl Wirt Adams, who will use Every [exertion?] to [?] the names of [these?] men in order that they may be brought to [?] punishment, and have restitution made, if practicable, of the property—

Such high handed & lawless acts cannot be too severely punished

Macon Mi Mar 28^th 1864

I am personally acquainted with A J Lee & I can say in his behalf that he was under my command for a year as private now commissioned officer and as a Lieut and that he performed his duties as such, he was at Vicksburg during the seige and was paroled as 3^rd Lt Co I 5^th Reg 4 Brig M S T and has not been exchanged so far as I know. It is due to myself and the government to say that I have been informed Lt Lee is charged with disloyalty to the C. States. But as he is a paroled prisoner I think he should have a chance to make a defense as soon as the nature of the case will admit. All which is respectfully submitted to His Excellency

Lee, wife as aforesaid, is a Lady of unimpeachable character, and that Statements set forth in the said petition are true in every particular, and would ask that her petition be granted
