Sir.

In answer to the charge made against me in your letter to the Sheriff of this county, in reference to dispensers of liquors. I beg ~~your~~to direct your notice to the following, and would most respectfully request you to inform me who it was that gave you the information relative to "many indictments" standing upon the records of this county against me. If your informant be Isaac Applewhite, he is now in bond, for his appearance at Court and is a ~~transient man~~new comer here.

I, Sampson L. Lamkin Clerk of the Circuit Court certify that there are no indictments on file or on record, unsettled in this office in favour of the State of Mississippi against Stephen McClendon.

If the Governor requires it, I will give him the names of nearly every person in the county as to my honesty and sobriety as a citizen—having been born and brought up in this county, and being now 43 years of age. I am known to every person in the county Please do not consider me troublesome. I am extremely anxious to place myself in a proper light before the Governor of the State.
