D^r Sir, [gap] For fear the letter I wrote you a few days since may not come to hand I embrace the opportunity of a personal conveyance by Mr Housar—of this letter—

The Soldier's families in Bolivar, & nearly all of the Citizens are destitute of Salt—But little has or can come across the Miss River—When it could have come the Military pressed all the teams that started & now the County is destitute of forage & the roads nearly impassable On this side a Mr Gitchell commenced hauling Salt & delivering it on Sunflower River at 50.⁰⁰ per Bu.—The last trip Six weeks ago his Salt was pressed on the railroad by the Milita-ry—Then what are we to do—There are not less than One hundred & thirty or forty heads of families requiring at least 10 Bu to each family—making about 1200 or 1400 Bu of Salt required for Bolivar—I dont suppose more than three or four hundred Bu will cross the river and that most of it at ruinous prices in a currency not many are provided with viz 25 Doll in Greenback—money.

We trust you will aid us—by having salt delivered at Winona as cheap as can be & we will pay for it & haul it away
