Letter from G. C. Chandler to Mississippi Governor Charles Clark; January 16, 1865

His Excellency
Gov. Chas. Clark.

Dear Sir⁠—Elisha Bodford was tried and convicted at the last Aug. Term of the Circuit Court of Lauderdale county, for permitting his slave boy, Ike, to go at large and trade as a free man. The evidence clearly established his guilt, and the statutory fine of five hundred ^dollars^ was imposed on him. As I know Mr. Bodford to be a good and patriotic citizen, as he was convicted under a law not generally enforced, and, indeed, not generally known, and as his conviction has already had a good effect in his county, and as his neighbors inform me that he is a poor man and has two soldiers families to support, the law has perhaps been sufficiently vindicated, and I feel at liberty to join in the petition to your Excellency to remit his fine.
