Observing from the papers, that it is your intention, at an early day to call out the Militia, which course we endorse and approve, we still feel it our duty to lay before you the condition of the people of our County (Calhoun) [gap] When the Militia was called out in August last, there was from this County four companies comprising about 180 or 200 men, respond-ed. Many of those, say 75 or 100 was composed of details and exempts, leaving as we now think and be-lieve about 100 men in this County liable to Militia Service. The point we desire to bring to your atten-tion is this—The persons liable to Militia duty in this County are men, poor, and whose families in nine cases in ten depend upon them alone for bread, and for all these at this season to be called out, will almost beg-gar them, and deprive them for the next year of bread—To avoid this we submit, the following course upon Consultation with the enrolling officer—It will require 15 or 20 men on duty in our County with the Sheriff and his deputy to do the duty, and we are ready to vouch for that number's performing the service requir-ed of them—Authorise 20 men at a time to be called out in this County, and let the Captains of Companies collect their men and each detail their porportion of said number to act for 30 days, and then from the bottom a like number for the next 30 days. We think

and so state to you, that by this course much suf-fering and dissatisfaction will be obviated, and if consistent with your sense of duty, we earn-estly recommend it to your consideration.

The Militia Companies as organized last fall at Grenada, were commanded by Capts W^m S Hudson, Allen Barr, C. K. M^cCool and Chas. A Lewers, to whom any order address-ed will receive prompt attention

N B Under a sense of duty and pursuant to a resolution of the Legislature, and that the people may have due notice of Gen Lee^s proclamation, we are now engaged in a canvass of our county, urging our soldiers to return to duty. Many are going, and many are promising to return to their colors.
