To His Excellency Charles Clark Govenor of the State of Mississippi

The Petition of Stephen D Hunter of the County of Lafayette would show unto your Honor that he was on the 7' day of Jan^y,, 1865 elected by the people of said County to the Office of Tax Assessor for said County, to fill a vacancy caused by the death of M C Maples who was elected at the General Election in October 1864.

Your petitioner has given bond, and been qualified as the law directs, and is about to enter upon the duties of his office, as will appear by the Certificate of the Clerk of the Probate Court, hereto annexed. Your petitioner would shew that at the time of his Election he was at Home, on furlogh from his Regiment in Virginia the 19'. Mississippi Vols and a member of Co F Capt Bowles. Your petitioner had been confined in the Hospital at Richmond for some time with Serious illness & was allowed to come home, to replenish his Health, Your petitioners health is yet very indifferent, So much so, that he cannot take much exercise on a diseased leg, without great suffering, and is therefore totally unfit for service in the field, he will be bound shortly, to enter upon the duties of his Office, which are important and necessary, to the interest of the State, but it so happens that the Conscript office in Oxford has given your petitioner notice to report to him & seeks to send your petitioner to his command in Virginia, and will do so without the intervention of your Excellency in the premises. is 47 years of age, has a wife and 7 children and circumstances needy, and prays for your Excellency an Exemption from his Milatary duty, So that he may enter upon the discharge of his duties of Assessor, and as in duty bound will ever pray &c

We the undersigned Citizens of Lafayette County are well acquainted with Mr Hunter and most cheerfully recomend his application to the favorable Consideration of his Excellency Govenor Clark, this 24^th day of March 1865

I William Delay Clerk of the Probate Court of said County, Do Certify that at an Election held on the 7^th day of January 1865 in said County for Tax Assessor in the room of M C Maples dec^d,. S. D. Hunter was duly Elected, and has been qualified by taking the oath of Office and giving Bond & Surety as required by law, and [which?] said Bond & qualifications have been approved by the Juge of said Probate Court. In Testimony whereof

This is to certify that Sg^t. S D Hunter Co "F" 19^— Miss Infty having personally appeared before this board we have this day carefully examined said Hunter and find him suffering from chronic ulcer of left leg and Scrofulous Diathesis which in our opinion renders him unfit for duty in the field. Said Hunter having been elected Tax Assessor for the County of Lafayette Miss. we would respectfully recomend that he be detailed for that duty

Oxford April 11' 1865

Sir

Having been elected Tax Assessor for Lafayette County to fill a vacancy caused by the death of M C Maples who was elected at the General Election in October last, I was, about to enter upon the discharge of my duty when the Enrolling Office of the Confederate service at this place notified me that I must report and rejoin my Reg^t in ~~Mississip~~ Virginia, Suggesting at the same time that in application to your Excellency I might possibly obtain a requisition or be called it, by which I might be enabled to attend to my office...I herewith inclose a petition, which contains a narrative of my case, together with a copy of certificate from the Board of Surgeons at Grenada, and submitting the case ask of your Excellency if in your power such relief as may enable me to go on and discharge the duties of Tax Assessor. Awaiting anxiously your answer
