D^r Sir

I recv^d. your letter dated yesterday and hasten to express my regret that my last letter led you to infer that I was under the impression that you were responsible for my coming to Vicks-burg. I merely ment that I was encouraged by your letter, and that of Cap^t Hale. I did not refuse the offer of employment, but I Suggest-ed that I would wait Cap^t Hale^s return; 'a I thought he wl^d. find a more Suitable man for the chain-gang, that is a man who Knew the streets better better than I did, and ^I^ take his place.

Well your Son made a change to that effect, and placed me in charge of the Courthouse, for Which I am thankful—I hope you ^are^ not displeased with me. I will try not to be So Squeam-ish; I Know your disposition towards me, and I feel it all. Your [resistance?] to M^rs ^B— will serve her much, and for her and myself let me again thank you, and remain respectfully and truly &c
