J. L. Alcorn,

Sir,

I have the honor to state that on the 28^th,, of June last, the U. S. Marine Hos-pital at this place was turned over to me by the Freedm. Bureau, with a large number of colored patients, men, women and children, many of whom were old and infirm, blind and disa-bled some of them were idiotic and all of them unable to earn a livelihood. These were gathered from other Hospitals in the State, but chiefly from the Lauderdale Asylum when that institution was broken up during the previous winter. Genl. Ames assumed the charge of these people as Governor of the State and from time to time made appropriations for their support. The last was made for

the months of January and February of this year and the Asylum is now indebted for its maintenance during this month to citizens for supplies and for the pay of its employees.

During the month of July last thirty incurables were transferred to this place from the State Insane Asylum at Jackson because of the crowded condi=tion of the latter. With the return of Spring, many who were supported during the cold weather find homes and a support by watching or remaining all day in the houses of laboring people while they are absent at their work. Many of these will probably remain at the homes thus found, which will make room for other incurables from the Asylum at Jackson.

There are now at the Asylum forty two Adults, men and women, white and colored, (28 of these are lunatic or idiotic,

4 blind, and 10 old, inform and disabled) and seven Orphan children supported at the charge of the State at a cost, for subsistence, me-dicine, clothing etc. of $65/100 Scrip dayly each Adult.

I would therefore respectfully ask for the following requisition for the month of March.
