Dear sir

Allow me to introduce to your most favorable acquaintance my friend Mr Barney Hansel. Knowing that the office of sheriff in the county of Chickasaw to be only temporarily filled, and that the present encumbent, is unfortunately very objectionable to all parties. And utterly incompetent to discharge the duties of said office satisfactorily to any

one, I have presumed to suggest to M^r Hansel that he would apply in person to your excellency for said office. Mr Hansel I have known for many years, And I take pleasure in endorsing him to you as a gentleman, sober industrious, energetic & in every way worthy & fully qualified to fulfil the duties of the office. And one I know would be well recieved by the people, of all parties. Mr Hansel was a staunch supporter of yours in the late election, And if it is within your power to give him the

position, I take a pride & pleasure in recomending to your consideration so worthy a gentleman—

Enclosed please find letter of Col. James Gordon, the Same I fully intended to deliver in person, & only for unavoidable circum-Stances should do So.

As quite a number of my friends and others have Solicited me to make application for the Sheriffs Office of this County, provided the present encumbent is not to be rattified, and feeling my capacity & qualification, I have deemed it but expedient to enclose this as also Col Gordons letter to you. Having been and am yet one of your Staunch Supporters, which I intend to remain so long as your Excellency holds the highest Office of our State, or any other.

Hoping Sir if your Excellency can assist me to secure the appointment. in case as before Stated, you will do me the great kindness to give me the appointment, assuring You at the Same time the goodness of Your generosity shall never be forgotten—and should your Highness think advisiable, will proceed to Jackson to See you in person. Believing that your

administration is the true Policy of our Country, and wishing your Excellency the most of prosperity & Success, and assuring you I shall at all times defend your policy as that of Our Country
