Sir—

In reply to your request concerning the case of W^m. Hanlon now undergoing sentence at the Penitentiary in this place; we give you the follow-ing facts. Both Hanlon and (Beaus) the man he shot belonged to C^o. "A_" 34^th. Infty, then stationed at Columbus Miss. (of which company we new their members) the shooting took place some time during the month of August 1867. The difficulty [between?] them orginated in a drunken quarrel during which Hanlon went to his tent got his rifle and Killed Beau, both being considerably under the influence of liquor at the time of the occurance and for some day previous. Immediately after the shooting Han=lon was turned over to the civil authorities at Columbus Miss. by Lt Col E. Gay, Capt 34^th. Infty.
