Subsequently, I learned that Mr. Kimbrough & Mr. Holland had been recommended for the same Office, & but for the, apparently earnest wish of your friend, I would have requested the ~~with draw~~ withdrawal of my name; and if my appointment will, in the least embarrass you in your administra-tion, I beg that you will no longer consider me as an applicant for the Office. It might not be amiss, in this connection, for me to State that I have never assumed any politic-al name, or identified myself with any po-litical party, beyond an earnest sup-port of yourself, nor is it now

As some friends, deeming me worthy, have re-commended my appointment as Assessor of Marshall County, and as some confusion & misap-prehension of facts has seemingly extended this subject; it is deemed advisable for me to write you concerning the [fame?].

Alexander Phillips called, as he stated, to request me to accept the Office, saying, that ap-plication wuld be made for my appointment. This was the first intimation I received
