Dear Sir

I have been recently stricken down by paralysis; it is supposed to be a slight case, & I may be able to be out in a few days; Such is the flattering report of my physician & friends; in the mean time, I have found it necessary to change my deputy for another, as I conceive for the public interest. He proves to be wholly incompeten to discharge the duties of the office alone, and without constant instruction; I have not forbid him the office, nor has there been any disagreeable feeling between us, but he comes and goes as usual; I have placed Mr James M. Buckley in the office for his known competency. Mr Eivers has taken from the office, without my consent a large number of papers, and some record books, from the Probate office proper, with a view as he says to put

them in order, at different times, & to a distance of two miles—this was very much disapproved of by me—as a dereliction of duty—

My purpose in the premises has been to subserve the public good, & could I have continued to give my personal supervision to the offices would have had no occasion to make this change—but during my present infirmity have thought this action proper—indeed inoperative—and hope it will meet the approbation of your Excellency—

I have never been absent from the office one day since my appointment; I am noted for my strictness and order in the management of business, and in all things relating to the orderly conducting of the same—Mr Eivers is a good copyist but will not do to leave in the office by himself
