Gov. J. L. Alcorn

Dear Sir,

You willplease excuseme troblingyou with a few lines again in regardtothe applicants forthe position of Marshal of this Town—being Mayor, I feel a deep interest in this official, as we are so intimately connected with each other, and should be sorry tohave a man acting Marshal that, thepeople would not be willing to entrust their business into hishands: The applicants as far as I know, are all alike in their political status—but knowing each of them very intimately, and being on friendly terms with eachofthem, my preference results alone, from their fitness for the office—M^r Ingram was appointed some time City weigher butso strong and united was the feeling against him, thatnot a Merchant would allow him to weigh one Bale of their cotton, and he in consequence resigned, after waiting for some 2 Months—

We appointed another man, andhe is daily employed by the Merchants—in weighing their cotton. from this you can infer the want of confidence—this Community toward M^r,, Ingram—andthis feeling still exists, which would be almost fatal tohis efficiency as Marshal—and hence I hope he will not be appointed—M^r Bosworth now constable of this Beat, is a sober, honest and faithful officer. has the good will and implicit confidence of this entire community—I shall deem it a very special favor if you will have the kindness to appoint M^r Bosworth for my Marshal—With these lines I leave the decision entirely in your hands—and wouldbeglad ifyou would consult M^r Jones andCol Mister of ourCounty, who are well acquainted with all the applicants.
