Philadelphia Miss 10^th April 1871

My Dear Sir

A sense of duty, and an earnest interest in the common welfare of our county forces us to enter a solemn protest against the appointment of G M Cooksey to the office of County Treasurer of this County, He came here three years ago as the owner and keeper of a retail whiskey shop of the most Humble grade, and has been in daily association & in our opinion full harmony and affiliation with the old and invincible Ring of Rule or Ruin outlaws that have infested this community since the war. There are many reasons why he should not be entrusted with so important a position and we hope, and earnestly and most forcibly urge and impress it upon you to spare us the trouble and rangling discord that would be engendered in our midst by his appointment, Mr Stewart the present Incumbent has not

resigned. It is true he has bought a farm in an adjoining County & is now engaged in improv-ing it. but he owns a half interest in a Store in this county & Claims citizenship here & is retaining the Office at the request & Solicitation of good citizens of the county to conduct some important prosecutions now pending in our circuit Court by Bills of Indictment against the former office-rs of the County for neglect of Official duty Forgery, Embezzlement of the public funds of the county &c It is his purpose to resign as soon as a good man will commit to serve who will honestly discharge the duties of the office & faith-fully look after the interest of the county; and when he resigns his resignation will be accom-panied by the name of a suitable man to be appointed as his successor. Hoping you will defer action in this matter untill you are further advised in the premises, we remain your most devoted friends & obedt Servts
