Received at Corinth Miss To H. Mask Mayor Employ the best Counsel at Command, spare no pains to vindicate the Laws, the expenses Shall be promptly paid (Signed) R. C. Powers actg Gov In accordance with the above dispatch I employed W. M. Inge & F. E. Whitfield for Five Hundred Dollors each to prosecute John T. and James Martin Frank & W. T. George James M^cNutt Zack Jobe Riley & Columbus Barker W^m & Joseph Johnson George Cheek & Shehan before the examining Court for a violation of the 4 Section of the KuKlux Law & I certify with pleasure that they prosecuted with zeal, Energy & decided ability—Six of the defendants were held to answer One by the Magistrates & Five by His Honor Judge O Davis—I am entirely satisfied the investigation has had a very salutory & benificial effect upon all who heard the investigation & the community Generaly—I would earnestly recomend that the some Counsel be employed to prosecute or assist in the prosecution in the Circuit Court. They are faithful & able Witness hand & seal May the 4 1871

I sat as magistrate on the trial of five of the six Defendants charged with Ku Kluxism—all of whom were bound over—in good bonds

It affords me pleasure to say that Co^l H. E. Whitfield and Co^l W. M. Inge conducted the trial with great energy and ability.—and I am satisfied the interest of the State re-quires that they should be retained in the farther progress of the cases
