To His Excellency
Governor Ames
of the State of Mississippi

The undersigned citizens of Wilkinson County Mississippi respectfully petition you for the pardon of Pressley Smith, colored, sentenced ^{to the penitentiary} on the 21' Day of May A D 1868 to the Penitentiary for the term of ten years for larceny & Burglary—Upto the time of that accusation Pressles had borne a good character. The Proof against him was but some of the Stolen goods were found in his house though he strenously insisted he bought them not Knowing they were stolen and many of our citizens entertain grave doubts as to his guilt, as there were other freedmen tried at the same time & sentenced for the same Larceny ^& Burglary^ who were perhaps more guilty than Pressley & whose pardon is not asked. Pressley has a wife & children dependent upon him & we think it would be well under all the circumstances if he were pardoned and allowed to return home & which we respectfully ask & may be done
