To Adelbert Ames—Prov^l Gov^r of Mississippi

The undersigned citizens of Lowndes County in said State would respectfully show that at the August Term A. D. 18698 of the Circuit Court of Loundes County the following colored citizens of said County were tried and convicted upon a charge of having feloniously stolen one cow &c. and were sentenced to be confined at hard labor in the Penitentiary of the State

James Phillips
Phillip Phillips
Abram Phillips

Said colored citizens have already been so confined for the period of One Year (12 months) and we being convinced that the object of the law in punishing its citizens has been carried out—and that their punishment has been sufficient to cause them heartily to repent of their transgression ~~&c will~~ We would respectfully request that that said prisoners be released from further confinement and be discharged. One of said persons to wit Ma^c Phillips is an old man and if your excellency sees proper to withhold the executive clemency from the others—we more particularly offer this petition in his behalf hoping that it may meet with a
