From the Mississippi Department of Archives and History Governor Clark Collection. Telegram from Confederate Major General Dabney H. Maury at Mobile, Alabama, to Mississippi Governor Charles Clark at Macon, Mississippi, informing him that United States Army forces from Vicksburg, Mississippi, under General Hall, had reached the Big Black River yesterday morning. The Confederate Army, commanded by Confederate General Brayman, will meet the United States Army with equal numbers with forces from Natchez, Mississippi, and below. Maury asks for Clark to summon the state militia, and says that Confederate General Gardner is enroute from Corinth, Mississippi, to Jackson, and will watch over Meridian, Mississippi, that evening.
