Hon J. J. Pettus,

D^r Sir:——I was appointed by Gov J. J. M^cRae in 1854, locating agent to locate the Swamp & overflowed lands of Newton County which I done according to the instructions of the Gov: They were as follows. to wit,.——To locate all that was liable according to the act donating there lands to the State from the passage of the act in 1850 wheather entered or not Consequently there was five Sections of my locations in the Augusta land dist. that was not Confirmed and Mr Dillworth Secy of State refused to pay me, for these lands, located according to instructions that was not Confirmed which is a Clear loss to me, of $50, Also the Lands I located in the Columbus district

Town ° 8, Ranges 10, 11, 12 & 13 amounting in all to a fraction over 10 sections has never been acted upon as we have any information of Although I sent the Gov: a list of them he approved them and forwarded them to Washington——After a length of time hearing nothing from it I made him a duplicate report, which the Gov also forwarded and we have not heard from it & know=ing that you have some experience of the trouble and [expence?] of Scouring 15 Sections of Swamp land grants for as rich an old gentleman as the State of Mississippi I Solicit your aid in laying my case before the Legisla-ture for an appropriation of one hundred & fifty Dollars ($150) yet remaining unpaid by the State and interest from the date of the Confirm [gap] ation of my location which can date can be attained in the Secy^s office

I send down a list of my locations in the Columbus district by my friends Doct M. M. Keith & W^m Thames, who will render the necessary information & aid in bringing the Claim before the legislature,

I See no reason why the lands as located Should not Yet be Secured to the State of Mississippi as they are equally liable with the others

Hoping that you and my friends [Keith?] & Thames, may succeed in getting my Claim through
