Dear Sir,

A Mr John. B. Martin has been so unfortunate, as, in a diffi-culty in the state of Miss. un-der the deepest provocation as we are assured, to shoot his his antagonist—for which he is now incarcerated in the state prison of that state.

His brother of this place, a warm and personal, as well as po-litical friend of ours and of yours, is plunged in the deepest grief in consequence, and is doing all in a brother's power to induce the inter-position of Executive clem-ency in his behalf.

Bradly, Finley, Brooks and a host of others are assisting him in the matter, and we feel in duty bound to invoke your cooperation.

The brother here, is one of the most industrious and worthy men we have, and a man upon whom favors are never lost. The event has cast a gloom over us [?] who only know the brother amongst us; and we truly feel that his grief is our grief, and his brother is our brother. We are assured that the brother incarcerated, is a man occupying a worthy position is Miss, and a man universally esteemed. Efforts are being made in that state for the inter [gap] position of the Governors clemency, and we desire to have added to those, the efforts of those of Cal-ifornia like yourself whom we know to possess warm hearts, & powerful voices.

Is it asking so much of you, to desire that you will use your personal [?], and will make use of your high position with Senators Brown and Davis, and others of your acquaintance, to assist in the accomplish-ment of our desires?

We do not known the par-ticulars of the affray which has cost Mr. Martin his lib-erty, neither does the brother, or we would give them you. as we are acting fairly in the matter, and find that

we are writing to a friend.

Hoping that our appeal to you may not be [fruitless?], and that the brother of our friend may again be Restored to his liberty through executive clemency, induced by your aid,
