D^rSir, I have rec^d two letters from D^r Hilgard in relation to the publication of his geological surveys in both of which he requested me to correspond with you—In the mean time I have opened a correspondence with the Metho=dist publishing house in Nashville—That house writes me, that they think that they can publish the work within provisions of the law, and desired to continue the correspondence. This I have written to Hilgard, and had

upon the right of his first letter requested him to make an effort at that establishment. This for some reason he has neglected to do I have written him again to the same effect. All things considered that would be a good point to make a favorable impression in the outset of our perils, and could we only make them materials it would be a point gained—I dont want the work done north and hope that you will if possible draw on your contingent fund should it become necessary in order to have the work done South—The meeting of the Stockholders will be on the 28^th of June, Mi central R. R^d I hope that you will attend in person, or by a proxy that will be perfectly [suitable?] On this I have nothing to add to what I said to you during the winter—You then indicated a man to act as proxy, that was satisfactory to me, and his appointment would probably give more genl satisfaction than any man in the State.

—Watchman what of the night!! I have not despaired of a union of our forces under the old banner with a sharp addition to its powers and duties
