Spring Cottage Mississippi April 25th 1863

To his Exelency John J. Pettus

Sir I drop you a few brief lines, by the hand of Mr= Wooten in compliance with your Order to me directed giving you immediate information Should the enemy attempt to come up Pearl River or make an effort to move the obstruction placed their by your Order

On Monday 20th inst the yankeys came up Pearl River to Ganesville Miss—with two steamboats and some twelve hundred soldiers with a batery on each boat of artilery and demanded the surrender of the vilage the citizens some gave up some fled for their lives the enemy threw out a picket guard some two miles and held the place until the Evening of the 21st inst then took the steamer A. G. Brown and some five negroes and went back down in the direction of Fort Pike—

Report says the boats came up near the blockade before they turned back, I called out a force to strenchten the blockade immediately but found they left without interfearing and I suspended the operation, owing to the lateness of the season I think their is little danger of their attempting this season—
