To His Excellency the Governor of the State of Mississippi

My object in writing you is in behalf of one John K Craig a prisoner in the State prison, although I do not wish to encroach on your time to great extent, yet I think the circumstances of the case and ~~the ca~~ humanity deman^ds a little of your time and attention Hoping you will pardon me for adressing you in this way. I will first say that the Prisoner lived in Belleville Illinois for several years and was a respectable honest Industrous citizen that he worked for my father for 2 or 3 years held a place of trust which he never violated he went South and returned once went again it was a long time before we heard where he was and it was not from him that we found out where he was. I would _have made some exertion to get a pardon for him but did not know how to opperate as all his old friends in Belleville had removed from that place I have removed from that place and am living in Hasting Minnesota. I send you some of his letters and one from the Chaplin of the Prison hoping that you will read them and investigate the case in hand you will percieve that he has not had fair and impartial trial which he has a right. not wishing to intrude on your valuable time hoping that you will _find the facts in the case the same as are represented. I leave it in your hands.
