Dear Sir,

By a regulation of the Military Board, at its late meeting, I was required to make twelve appointments upon my Military Staff. The Board failed to designate the rank of the members of the Staff, and I have been compelled to avail myself liberally, of the discretion with which an officer of the same rank with myself, in the regular army, is clothed—I have as yet made but ten appointments, but will at an early day, fill the two remaining places.

On the opposite page you will find a list of my appointees—with the rank of each , which I furnish you, that they may be comm=issioned. Permit me to suggest, in order to obviate difficulties which might possibly arise, that the commission read—"with the rank of (here insert the rank) when serving on the

staff of the said Commandant of the said Division, or engaged in the discharge of the duties connected therewith"

When acting as Commandant of Division, I necessarily rank as Maj. General—and no difficulty can consequently arise in commi=ssioning my staff as suggested

Be pleased to inform me at once, when the commissions—shall have issued, in order that I may publish the appointments in orders—
