Hon J. J. Pettus,

Dear Sir,

Enclosed in this, I send a note from a mutual friend, Hon P. S. Catching, which will explain the purpose of my writing I have been anxious ever since the struggle for Independence commenced to go with the army, but not until now have been able, to arrange my domestic affairs. I am not by profession a soldier, but am not unacquainted with mili-tary affairs, it once have been an object of study with me.—I am by birth and education a Virginian, born at Portsmouth and educated at the Univ=ersity of Va, and have been for 4 years a resident of Miss., during which time I have exerted myself to the utmost in the [?] of sound governmental opinions among the people at least of this county, just those principles which having prevailed throughout the whole State Eventuated in her Secession I propose transmitting to the President as referees of my character and capacities, the names of the Hon A G Brown, Hon Wiley P Harris, with whom I am connected by marriage, Hon D. C. Glenn, and that of your honored self, should it be consistent with your inclination.

Should you see fit to recommend me to the President for any such appointment as is designated in the note of our friend Mr. Catching I beg that you would send me the letter of recommendation which together with the others I will transmit to President Davis.
