Lexington July 13^th 1861

Your Excellency

Dear Sir

Having just returned home from Chapel Hill At which college I graduated. the 6^th ult,) I intended to join the army immedi-ately, but finding it impssible for those that have already joined to procure arms. And I being the youngest son my parents have protested strongly against my going as they say I would make an end to their further happiness. I relinquished my intension & commenced the study of Law. But I see from M^r Lincoln's message. it will require all the resources of the South to repel the Northern hords. I offer you my services in any honorable capacity you may see fit to place, And I will only ask to have my expenses paid while in service

As my father is wealthy, & money can be used for other purposes. If you wish letters of recommendation I can get them from almost any man you may wish As I have a very extensive acquaintence If there is no place which I may be of service to you at present, If at any time you may need my service. though little as it may be, it is at your command
