His Excellency J. J. Pettus

Dear Sir

I have heard that there is a manu-factory of Bayonets at Jackson, Miss. and mite you to know it will be possible to procure enough of to furnish Boyonets for a Company of Miss Vols, under my command, who are armed with the Mississippi Rifles, without boyonets, I would be glad to get straight common Bayonet, I am having my company well drilled in the [?] with Boyonets, by a competent teacher, and could make them very [?] with that misson it in could be pro cured, I would take in it or a favor personal to myself is they could be got,

Our Regiment the 9^th is becoming very well drilled & will not suffer in comparison with any here and I would almost say we excel any. W for as I can come, Your move to get up the Rifles & Double barrel guns in private bonds, is in my opin-ion a very good one, and must [?] work favorably in our dearth of arms, I hope you may be able to

procure a large number, and have them fitted up for service, as the indications now are that no shall need them, In the hands of our brave people fighting for their homes. I can have no fear of the result,
