Letter from William F. Stearns to Mississippi Governor John J. Pettus; October 13, 1861

Oxford, Missi, Oct. 13. 1861.

Sir:

Owing to the suspension of the exercises of the University, Prof. Henry Whitborne finds it necessary to leave the country, in order that he may obtain the means of subsistence for his family.

He has property, and friends, in Canada, which province he left twenty years ago, and he desires to return thither. He is a British subject, on having been born in the Island of Jamaica. I have known him, intimately, for many years, and I can assure your Excellency, with entire confi=dence, that the cause of the Confederate States will not suffer, in Cana=da, from any representations of his. He has a passport from the British Consulat New Orleans, and he desires another from yourself, to facilitate his passage through the Confederate lines; and I trust that your Excellency, considering that the bread of his wife and six helpless children depends upon his ability to reach his friends in Canada, will not hesitate to grant his request.
