Esteemed Sir;

Owing to the constant pressure on your office, & attention, I could not see you as I wished before I left, tho I shall do so in a few days. I shall return to Va on the 20^th by way of Nashville where an hours business demands personal attention & then to Knoxville where I have an arrangement for keeping our sick overnight when homeward bound, as they were suffering greatly for want of room & attention—thence to Leesburg. At Leesburg ^or near there^ I have a branch of the parent Hospital at Warrenton, and out of our general supplies have supplied that institution. It has however unsettled claims & matters to adjust no one else can arrange but myself. And being part & parcel of the Warrenton Hospital ought not to be separated in management. Indeed it is wholly useless to separate them. One man, with the present System of Smoothly moving organisation can not only Superintend both, but four or five more.

during the winter with far too little to do. I think in appointing new agents they should be appointed to new fields of labour, not to fields already filled & really needing no more.

That is my opinion as to Leesburg. I told my esteemed friend Caskey so: and it would cut our work up into small patches & complicate our settlements with the Department at Richmond.

Mr Caskey & myself can do anything to be done in perfect harmony—from mutual esteem, similar views, disposition to go into what we undertake with all our might regardless of consequenses. But there must be work enough for two men. In this case there is not. Our Depots are built—manned & nearly through the pressure of winter work—The Hospitals are organized, filled with first class officers—supplies laid in—the chief labour done—in Va—and no one can carry it on, as you know, like those who inaugurated the plans. Where the present Brigade now at Leesburg will winter is yet uncertain. Lt E E Armstrong Chief Clerk of the Miss Depot at Manassas, writes me that near 2[?] members of that Brigade are (at his writing) in the office & inform him that the four Miss Regt are to come to Manassas & winter. I am surprised at this, & think it very strange He says another Brigade takes its place If so then the Warrenton Hospital alone will remain & be ample.

I mention these things to show that if Armstrong is correct, there will not be needed any additional agency under any supposable circumstances.

Having passed through all the toil drudgery, & a large share of the outlay, in borrowed means, to get these things into their present condition I do not like, unless it were really necessary to see my legitimate work cut up & myself left with less to do than one action man ought to do with the utmost ease.

But we will chat over these matters again, before I leave.
