To His Excellency
Jno. J. Pettus
Gov. State of Miss.

Dear Sir

The accompanying transcript from the Record of the Circuit Court of this county, fall term of 1860, will give you the facts in the case of State against J. C. Chery for an assault on Mr Hearn, The sentence of the court in said case was fine and imprisonment. You were pleased to interpose your clemency in the latter, and my object in thus troubling you with this communication, is to ask a remission of the former.

In times like the present, it behooves us to cherish, aid, and sustain every young man of promise, talent and standing in our new and glorious republic, I have known young chery from his infancy, and can testify with pride and pleasure, to his moral and social qualities, Amiable, yet dignified, affectionate, but spirited, he possessed and still possesses every noble and honorable impulse, his pride, growing out of the knowledge that he had ever borne an unimpeachable character, prevented him from forming an indiscriminate association with the young men of our city, and for this reason he was often met with insult & inuendo upon the streets, he stood it till forbearance ceased to be a virtue—he resented it, for which I applaud him—In a moral point of view he was clearly justified, but unfortunately rendered himself amenable to the law,

It is to ask you to relieve him of the fine, which is—

certainly a reproach on my young friend, who, just starting in life with an interesting young wife, will, these hard times, find it difficult to raise,—

It is not often that I trouble gentlemen in high official positions with petitions, but my interest in this young man must plead my excuse. My friend Hon. Rob S. Green or indeed any gentleman from this place can testify to the rare moral worth of Mr J. C. Chery
