My Dear Sir:

I have recently filed with the Sec'y of War an application for the position of Lieutenant on the regular Army of the Confederate States, and have been informed by a private Corespondeant of Richmond that no appointments will be made till after the Expiration of the Provisional Government, I therefore address you of this time I request, you to address a Communication to the Sec'y of War on the subject—

Having been in the adjutant general's office with you for sometime, and while there having had officed business with the vacuos furlough of the U. S. War Dep't, I of course had advantages over numerous

young officers who are now crowding the Dept with applications, and I will be glad if you would mentor my Con-nection with the adjutant generals office—I will be glad if you would mention that ^I^ tendered my resignation last May, & that you declined accepting, and please state the reason you assigned, which I consider eminently complimentary. For the part four of five months, I have been in service in the Central Army of Ky in the Brigade of Gen. Buckner, and was appointed ^by him^ an instuctuer in Infantry, which position I hold for two months and Resigned to go to Richmond but have not yet gone—

Before resigning I got Gen. Buckner office endorsement of to my proficiency in the Infantry, dull, and with a Communication from you I hope to be able to secure a position—I contemplate going to Richmond about the 20^th Feb'y, and will be

pleased for you to address the Sec'y prior to that time so that I may find the communication on my mind—Gen. Buckner's com'd and Gen. Floyd also of non encamped of Russellville, having left Bowling Green about a week service—

Everything is now [?] it is cold, my Monday; and military operations I consider impractible—

The Miss Regt's on this line of the army are very much told of the gathering of the 18^th Reg in the recent boute in East Tenn—
