To His Excellency
Governor Pettus,

Sir,

Col Tupper ten-dered me ^verbally^ the Position in his Staff of Aid De Camp,—in the event he is elected & I'm defeated. He is a man for whom I have the highest esteem & warm feelings of friend-ship. He will grace, dignify & honor the position, which it seems, he is chosen to fill.

If I am defeated for Brig Genl, 4^th Brigade, I am perfectly willing, I will feel proud to enter upon the duties, as Aid, however arduous & responsible.

Embracing the limited work I have had with your troops here for two or three weeks past, I can boast of having done it gratuitously as I have done for nearly two months past at other points & in other respects. These make the 6^th thousandth I have instructed & in part disciplined.

My purpose in disturbing you, Sir, with this brief letter, is to ask your concurrence with the selection of Col Tupper.

I have heard nothing of petition to President for my appt in Army.
