To his Excelence
Dear sir

Permit me sir to inquire if your Excelency if thair—are no relief for a Tanner from Millitia duty—not that I would screan my self from serving my Country but my self & Brother Henry T Beard seeing the great distress if our Country for leather & shoes & my Brother being a he cientific Tanner—have Engaged in the business have some three or four thousand dollars worth of stock on hands & now when the time is fast approaching when shoes will be needed the Militaries authorities of our Country & state claiming that Tanners were not Exempt by Law from Militia duty have had us both Enroled a Militia men & my brother

was drafted & is now in Camp of instruction our—Leaders Claim that the instructions of your Excelency to the Governor Releasing all Tanners from Conscript duty does not apply to those under Militia Law &c any Light of this Subject will be thankfully received by your Humble Servants,
