The 3rd Regiment, Tennessee Cavalry (Confederate), also known as Forrest's Old Tennessee Cavalry Regiment, the 18th Battalion, 26th Battalion, Balch's Battalion, and McDonald's Battalion, was organized in October 1861 in Shelby County, Tennessee under the command of Col. Nathan B. Forrest and served in the Western Theater attached to Forrest's, Armstrong's, and Rucker's Brigades, and in the Army of Tennessee. It was later commanded by Col. David C. Kelley. (NPS-BU)
